A Life of Adventure

Steve Nakamura

Steve Nakamura, owner of the Rachel Matthew Family of Companies, has made a generous gift to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation in his will. His gift is directed to Presbyterian Cancer Care.

For Steve Nakamura, life after cancer has been a life of adventure: two black belts in karate, as well as scuba diving, wakeboarding, skiing, and long, scenic motorcycle trips. His latest interest is Spartan racing—a sport combining running with extreme obstacle courses—which he does with his three young adult children.

An Albuquerque Police Department officer for 20 years, Steve has since become a leading New Mexico builder. He is owner, or “chief visionary,” of the Rachel Matthew Family of Companies, which he founded 25 years ago. Rachel Matthew has built more than 1,000 homes, as well as office buildings, schools, and other structures.

Steve’s life was forever changed 15 years ago by a cancer diagnosis, which led to immediate treatment and continuing follow-up care. This adventure helped forge a strong friendship with his physician, Bernard Agbemadzo, M.D., medical director for Presbyterian Cancer Care.

Out of gratitude for the compassionate care he received, Steve is making a generous gift to Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation in his will. His gift will create the Nakamura Family Fund, an endowed fund to permanently support Presbyterian Cancer Care, including staff education, patient assistance, and program needs. Steve has also joined the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation board of directors to help raise additional funds for cancer care and other priority programs. We applaud and appreciate Steve’s many contributions.
